In all eukaryotes, the conserved regulators of the unfolded protein response (UPR) maintain cellular homeostasis by stimulating the protein folding function of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). However, accumulating evidence suggests that plants, fungi, and metazoans have adapted these conserved mechanisms to perform specialized functions not shared with other organisms. I am interested in exploring these differences from a plant perspective to better understand the unique requirements needed to sustain continuous organisms' growth and biomass accumulation.
